MISS NIGERIA
Miss Sylvia Ansar, a 22 year old graduate of International Relations from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, won the Miss Nigeria Beauty Competition, "Miss Nigeria 2002", held in Lagos at the weekend. Ansar, who hails from Akwa Ibom State beat 18 other contestants to emerge winner. The out-gone Miss Nigeria, Amina Ekpo, also hails from Akwa Ibom. The zonal finals of the pageant kicked off at Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt, on January 26, with Miss Ansar emerging one of the finalists. The beauty 'Champion of Champions' to determine the new Miss Nigeria, was held at the Expo Hall of the Eko Hotel, Lagos. The event was drawn open at 8.30 p.m. when the contestants parading themselves in swimming trunks made their first appearance on the stage. In their second appearance, the aspirant beauty queens were dressed in traditional attire. It was amazingly colorful and ceremonial. The beauty crown seekers, made a display of their various talents immediately following this showcase. Sylvia Ansar, Gloria Enohi, the first runner-up, and Emem Okon, the second runner-up, impressed the judges the most with their extraordinary display of intelligence and talents. The queens were in night party wears in their third appearance, which was followed by a questions/answers session.
The winner of the pageant was announced at 2.45 a.m. by Yemi Sodimu, an actor and television presenter. Miss Sylvia Ansar, the winner, did not say much to the press after being crowned. She made this brief statement to reporters, "I am fulfilled being the Miss Nigeria 2002". Miss Nigeria beauty pageant is organized by Daily Times of Nigeria (DTN). Recently, Silverbird Productions Limited, organizes a competing or will I say a conflicting pageant, Most Beautiful Girl In Nigeria (MBGN). The 2001 Most Beautiful Girl In Nigeria, Miss Agbani Darego was the winner of the 2002 Miss World beauty pageant. The Miss Nigeria contest was not organized in 2001, and that paved the way for the creation of the Most Beautiful Girl In Nigeria. The dicey 2002 question is who will present the candidate for the Miss World contest for the year. Daily Times of Nigeria (DTN), and Silverbird Productions Limited are in court to get a ruling on this.
